Advanced Training
ICIQ has a strong commitment to offer training programmes for undergraduates, graduate students and doctoral researchers. We prepare a new generation of researchers with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the most important challenges in chemical research. We are convinced that an integral education beyond chemistry is crucial to achieve outstanding research results and fruitful life achievements.
Training Programmes
The ICIQ PhD Fellowship Programme is a competitive initiative that provides doctoral scholarships for talented and motivated students to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of chemistry.
ICIQ’s PhD Fellowships offer a unique opportunity to pursue a PhD thesis within one of the research groups at ICIQ, working under the supervision of one of the group leaders at the center. Students selected for the ICIQ PhD Fellowship Programme receive a competitive financial stipend to cover their expenses during the doctoral period. Additionally, they have access to ICIQ’s facilities, equipment, and resources, as well as training and professional development programs to enhance their scientific skills and interdisciplinary competencies. In 2022, the programme had 93 active doctoral students.
PhD theses defended in 2022
Throughout 2022, 23 doctoral theses were successfully defended at ICIQ and directed by Group Leaders of the Institute.

Master programmes
ICIQ offers two master’s training programmes in collaboration with public universities in Catalonia, aimed at providing advanced education to students.
– Master in Synthesis, Catalysis and Molecular Design (ICIQ – Universitat Rovira i Virgili):
ICIQ, in collaboration with Universitat Rovira i Virgili, launched the Master in Synthesis, Catalysis, and Molecular Design. This is a 60-credit programme conducted in English over an academic year. The Master provides a comprehensive overview of synthetic and catalytic processes, as well as the design of chemical processes at both laboratory and computational levels. It is primarily oriented towards research, equipping students with the tools to pursue a research career. The first semester is theoretical, with lectures given by researchers from ICIQ and professors from Universitat Rovira i Virgili. The second semester is entirely laboratory-based to facilitate the completion of the master’s thesis, supervised by one of the group leaders at ICIQ or a professor from URV.
– Master in Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences (BIST- Universitat Pompeu Fabra):
This is a joint academic program of the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences of UPF (DCEXS, UPF) and the Institute of Science and Technology of Barcelona (BIST). It offers multidisciplinary training that allows students to explore various branches of science and acquire broad knowledge in areas such as biology, physics, chemistry, and computer science. In addition to research training, the master’s program also provides professional skills in scientific communication, project management, and innovation. Monthly seminars conducted by scientists from around the world and an intensive winter school offering lectures and hands-on training in advanced experimental techniques are noteworthy.
Within the master’s programmes, ICIQ offers students the opportunity to undertake a research project with one of the research groups at the Institute.
